Odysseus No. 13

$650.00
sold out

Odysseus No. 13 has steam-bent white oak curves ending in carved, organic forms. One of the white oak curves to walnut joints is accented with a cherry wedge. The left two shapes are carved cherry and ash. The right top curve ends with a cherry and ash carved organic shape and the curve below it ends with walnut wood. The connecting body of the sculpture is mahogany and live-edge walnut. The walnut is inlayed with pine and maple wood. Odysseus No. 13 is interlaced with magenta, purple, white, black, and orange hand-made strings creating visual tension and potential energy.

My process subverts the perfectionism of traditional woodworking, and instead is more akin to the gesture of an impressionist’s palette knife. Textures of cracked and split wood, hand tool marks, and smooth surfaces illustrate how people are not complete, but in a state of growth or decay.

Odysseus No. 13’s composition of looping curves and hand-cut intersections is indicative of the ancient hero’s winding journey home. The sculpture encapsulates the beauty found in the diversity between perfection and imperfection.

Dimensions: H27” x W32” x D4”

Materials: Hand-Made Hemp Strings, Beeswax, Polycrylic, Ash, White Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Mahogany, Pine, Maple

The light weight sculpture is easily hung with two small screws and a template I will provide upon purchase.
